“Better Stop Drinking” – 1969

Even without this fantastical goat-like figure, a vision resulting from a drunken stupor of the unseen sufferer, the background of geometric shapes alone would have made this eye-catching work worth examining. Hirshman, who rarely drank, gave the collage one extra, and oft-overlooked, warning on the effects of alcoholic excess – a spider-like insect in the lower right hand corner  hanging from a red thread and wearing a halo.

Whether goat or pure fantasy, the life form is undoubtedly female, discernible by the tits of matchheads dangling from the stomach.
