“Doorman” – 1977

A “Doorman” with doorknob buttons and a door buzzer cap is cute. But for Hirshman, this assemblage of a high-rent, high-rise of suites for the wealthy with a potted puzzle bush in front was an inside joke. Named The Monterey, this was actually a dilapidated, rat- and roach-infested apartment building around the corner from Hirshman’s Philadelphia home, a low-rent dive that had never seen the likes of such a doorman.
