While Hirshman was left-leaning in his politics and likely sympathetic to the Russian Marxist revolutionary Leon Trotsky, it did not stop him from creating a less-than reverent portrayal. In the caricature, the mop-headed Trotsky has eyes of Fairy soap containers above a mustache and goatee formed out of three Hirshman-made rats.

Note: The only documentation of the Trotsky caricature is a black-and-white photo. The whereabouts of the piece is currently unknown. If you have any knowledge of the caricature, please use the contact page.
