“Still Life #2” – 1967

Three years after his first still life, Hirshman returned to the motif of a vase of flowers. His still-life style was still filled with the strange – a Super 8 movie reel (harking back to his days as an avant garde filmmaker), a ping pong ball and the trace of its bouncing fall in dotted arcs. The strangest is a baby’s golden arm sticking up from the vase of – even stranger yet – a hot water bottle (an object he had used in “Hitler” and “Animal Circus“). But if you stand back and squint, the strangeness recedes as the parts of the whole grow together to reveal a lovely arrangement that would lend its beauty to any table or window sill.
