While most artists at some time set up a vase of flowers for rendering a still life, it’s doubtful many have come up with such a strange arrangement as Hirshman’s almost-surreal take on the genre. Not only are the flower heads represented by bizarre “found objects” – spigots, a gear cog, a pocket watch with no hands – but a close-up reveals that the holes in the oyster shells each contain a small, grey creature with staring eyes.
