“The Hunt #1” – 1963

“The Hunt #1” is the first of many Hirshman collages to feature animals, either in their entirety or used as parts of the forms of the subject (see “The Psychiatrist“). The piece also points to what will become another Hirshman genre – dream-like fantastical imagery.

The one-cent coin faces on the hunters is an homage to Hirshman’s friend, fellow artist/teacher and US mint engraver Frank Gasparro, who designed the Lincoln Memorial relief on the back of the Lincoln penny.
